Nexus 7 Review

Last week was my birthday and I had been wanting a Kindle Fire for the longest time, and what's a better occasion than my birthday to get one? So I started doing my research, and there was this buzz all over the place about this new tablet that was supposed to be better than a Kindle Fire, and many other tablets for the super low price of $199 for the 8GB one. I actually ended up getting the 16GB tablet for $249 (in addition to $13.99 shipping fee), which sold out before the 8GB on the Google Play Store.

It took a while to get here, but here are some things about it that I really like (Please note that I am not a technology expert or anything):

- 7" Screen
- Comes with a $25 credit to the Google Play Store
- It also includes the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon
- Comes with the wall charger and the USB cable
- Weighs only .74 lbs
- WiFi and Bluetooth
- Beautiful sleek design
- Designed for the Google Play Store, much like the Kindle Fire is for Amazon
- Runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
- This is what sold me: 1.2MP front-facing camera!
- Includes a microphone, GPS and more!

The packaging looks simple and pretty:

The Good:

I have been playing around with the Nexus for a while, and I am in love. I love the beautiful, crisp image. The speed of response is awesome. The fact that it has a front-facing camera, and microphone so I can Skype my friends and family that live far away. The fact that I can use this as an e-reader is awesome, which is the most important reason why I wanted it. It is so easy to hold. Access to tons of apps from the Android Market. It also has a battery life of 8hrs in active use, so I can watch movies comfortably without having to worry about charging it. The price! One of the most affordable tablets out there right now. I also love the bigger keys on the virtual keyboard, which makes it easier for me to type. I can access my favorite social networking sites with no problem, since the apps work wonderfully. Loud speakers to listen to Pandora, I love that I don't need earphones to get loud, clear sound.

The Bad:

It really has nothing to do with the device itself, but I've got to say I was pretty disappointed with the way Google managed the whole shipping situation with the pre-orders. I ordered it on the 12th of July and I didn't get it till July 23rd, when the official release of the device to the public was on July 17th. Thinking I would get my device sooner than the 23rd, I ordered online and paid $14 for shipping. A lot of people were pointing out that, had they known this, they would've just gone to the store to buy it, instead of ordering the Nexus directly from the Google Play Store. There is a lot more to this, but I'm happy I finally got my device.
Enough with the rant. One of the things I don't like about the device is the fact that A LOT of apps do not work or aren't authorized to work with the device. I'm hoping that in the future that will get fixed.  It also doesn't have FlashPlayer. I don't like that the on/off button is on the side of the tablet, instead of at the top, but that is just something I think I'll get used to.Also, there has been a couple of times where my internet doesn't want to seem to connect, but it is simply fixed by turning off the WiFi for a few seconds and then back on. Or unplugging my router for a few minutes also might work.

The Verdict:

The Nexus 7 is a beautiful device, with fast response, super crisp image, long lasting battery, and easy to use. I think it's perfect for reading e-books. I have never owned an iPad, and I've heard that this is a very close competition for a fraction of the price. I really like it, and I'm very happy with it. The Transformers movie and the $25 credit to the Google Play store are just a plus. I highly recommended and I would give it 9/10.

Fifty Things About Fifty Shades of Grey

50 Shades of Crap Grey

Caution: Spoilers, content and language, don’t read if you haven’t read the book!

When I heard the buzz about 50 Shades of Grey and everyone talking about how amazing, sexy and hot it was, I was like “wow I’ve got to read this fantastic book, NOW!” After all, who doesn’t want to learn read about BDSM, right?

Oh boy!  I read it over the course of two weeks. It wasn’t really a long book; I’ve read more than that in a couple of days.  Here are a few 50 things (good and bad) about the novel and possible movie that I would like to point out:

1.    I started reading this book without knowing much about it, except that it was book about sex.  So my opinion was unbiased at the beginning.

2.    It borrowed from the Twilight fan base to promote the book. Now, I am not a fan of The Twilight movies or books at all (Harry Potter all the way baby!), but I thought well, it’s more adult, and supposedly more “realistic”.

3.    NOT REALISTIC, or should I say it's just as realistic as the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

4.    Okay, half the books I read are not realistic (Harry Potter, anyone?), but I thought I would give this a chance because EVERYONE said it was good.

5.    I give the author, E. L. James thumbs up for being smart and making her books famous by practically writing the sex relationship of Edward and Bella, if they had one and with different names.

6.    Romanticized names like Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, I am okay with that.

7.    Repetitive, repetitive, did I mention it’s repetitive?

8.    And by repetitive I mean I could tell you the whole story in one paragraph. If you want to read the whole book in a quick, simple way, read the description on the back the book.

9.    I think half of the book was about how beautiful Christian Grey is, and detailed descriptions on how his pants hang at the waist.

10.    The other half is sex.

11.    Hot, dirty, sweaty, playful, naughty sex.

12.    Sex that involves spanking, tying to the beds, beads, and a “Red Room of Pain.”

13.    Christian Gray is a self-made billionaire; yes BILLIONAIRE, at the tender age of 27.

14.    Other great qualities he possesses:  philanthropist, smart, cares about Anastasia, has a HUGE penis… that’s about it.

15.    He’s also “fifty-shades of fucked up” (whatever that means), because he had a difficult childhood, and a somehow different start at sex than the average folk.

16.    Grey’s personality is very controlling.

17.    Anastasia Steele is a 22 year-old virgin, fresh out of college, with beautiful skin and a smart mouth, “not a submissive bone in her” and no apparent gag reflex. She is also very clumsy, though she’s only shown to be clumsy once or twice in the book.

18.    Christian likes her for the qualities above, and the fact that she’s so innocent. What a creep!

19.    Okay, so they meet, they feel attracted to each other and then Christian proceeds to explain about his particular sexual preferences. Christian then formulates this contract in which everything about how their relationship should be and what it implies is described.  Anastasia feels a little scared and confused.

20.    And by everything, I mean, EVERYTHING: the way she dresses, what and how she eats, exercises, if she hangs out with anyone, how she sleeps, what she does with her body and more for a period of three months.

21.    Christian doesn’t “make love”, he “fucks hard”. He also doesn’t sleep with anyone and doesn’t like to be touched. He sounds like a keeper!

22.    All his employees are beautiful, tall, blond women.

23.    He buys Anastasia books worth $14,000, a Blackberry phone, a Mac Laptop, an Audi and enough clothes to fill up a huge closet, takes her on helicopter rides, and upgrades her trips on airplanes to first class. What a sweet guy!

24.    They exchange emails all the time, and he replies almost immediately. I mean when does this guy work? Maybe he doesn’t, after all he already has all this money (there are a couple of times when he’s on the phone talking about business, and business meetings).

25.    This book is written in 2011. So pretty modern right? OMG, the dialogue. I could not stop noticing how nobody talks like they do in today’s world or who knows there might be someone out there.  For example:

-    “Would you like some more wine?”
-    “I have to drive.”
-    “Some water then?”
I nod.
-    “Still or Sparkling?”
-    “Sparkling, please.”
-    “You’re very quiet”
-    “You’re very verbose”

26.    Anastasia Steele is twenty-two, yet she refers to her vagina as “down there” or simply “there.”

27.    She has a subconscious and an “inner goddess.” I frankly find this super ridiculous and two extra characters that were unnecessary in the story.  I giggled every time she said “My inner goddess is jumping up and down” and “my subconscious is rolling her eyes at me”.  Really?

28.    She had never felt sexually attracted to anyone in any way, until she met Grey.

29.    Christian Grey has more mood swings than a girl on her period.

30.    Anastasia is called Ana by her family and friends. Makes sense right? Just like Allisons are called Ally, and Margarets are called Maggie, and Josephs are called Joe. But for some reason Christian is always calling her Anastasia, Miss Steele. Really?

31.    I mean, that’s okay if you don’t know someone, but to call them that after they have already done the dirty? I’d be offended.

32.    Miss Steele is apparently anorexic.  Many parts of the book are about decisions with food.

33.    She also suffers from low self-esteem or something. Who would want to be with a guy who doesn’t like to cuddle?

34.    The book is so long with too many unnecessary details.

35.    Although the book’s writing style is generally cheesy, it can be entertaining at times.

36.    Grey has some sort of slave… okay not slave, but confidant or trusted employee a la Alfred Pennyworth, and who comes across as a stalker of Grey Taylor is his name, and he's always there at the right place and the right time.

37.    He also buys Ana’s underwear.

38.    Gray is apparently good at everything: business, literature, wine connoisseur, flying, dancing, fucking and playing music.

39.    Maybe I didn’t like it as much as I would’ve had I been older. After all this is called “mommy porn.”

40.    The book is romantic at times, but then Christian opens his mouth…

41.    I was hoping it would get better three quarters into the book. IT DIDN’T.  At which point I thought, I might as well finish it.

43.    Wait, they’re going to make a movie about this too?

44.    American audiences are usually a little hesitant when it comes to anything sex. I wonder how the movie is going to work. I mean reading a porn book with no images (only mental ones) is totally different than going to the theater to watch it.

45.    The ending of the book, though many would say it is a cliffhanger, did nothing for me.

46.    I don’t think I will be reading “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed”.

47.    I mean, the book isn’t bad (after all, it has sold more than a gazillion copies in all over the universe and beyond), just not my type of reading. Too slow, predictable and cheesy.

48.    I think I’d watch the movie if it was a done deal. Two hours of this, minus the excruciating details. I’ll take it. Plus I’d be curious who would be playing the characters!

49.    Anastasia is described as having brown, hard-to manage hair, and “eyes too big for her face.” I’m thinking Amanda Seyfried would be a good person to play her.

50.    Who would be the super creepy, disgustingly handsome, fucked-up Christian Grey? Oh man, well, I think Channing Tatum would be a good choice. After all, he already has the stripper movie in his repertoire. What’s another sexy movie? Or Ryan Gosling.  He seems to have more experience playing characters with volatile personalities (Drive?).

What did you think of the book? Did you like it? Did you hate it? Who would be your picks for the characters?

True Blood Forsaken Perfume!

If you are a fan of the show True Blood, get excited because they are soon to launch a new beauty line and perfume. The line includes nail polishes, lipsticks, a candle, body cream and body vail (so far).

I've got the new perfume, named Forsaken.

Forsaken is supposed to reflect the atmosphere of the show by being a mixture of light, dark, seductive and mysterious, bring out the sexiness and sultriness of the woman who wears it.

My first impression of the perfume: the packaging is beautiful, eye-catching, attractive, sexy.

The packaging is beautiful and elegant. And all those designs are textured and palpable.

What's inside???

The bottle is also beautiful: transparent with red tones and black designs. Also, a little detail resembling drops of blood makes it look extra "True Blood".
Also, there is a little bonus! The ring that holds the blood" drops can be easily removed from the bottle and worn in your hand.  It looks so pretty, and makes a nice accessory.

How does it smell?

It has sweet/spicy smell. If you have ever tried Baby Phat's Fabulosity Perfume, it smells similar to that.
It has a fruity, citrus smell, with a hint of jasmine of Queen of the Night flower.  Because of this, I think it's perfect to be worn during the day or night.

I wore this perfume to the Premier of the Dark Knight Rises.  I was waiting in line for a couple of hours. I actually got compliments on the way it smelled while I was in line! And after the three hours inside a hot movie theater, it kept smelling as wonderful as if it had just been applied. I really liked that the smell lasted that long, specially inside a crowded, hot movie theater. A little goes a long way.

Where can I get it, and for how much?
The beauty line and perfume are set to be released on August 9th, 2012. The perfume's price will be around $60 + SHIPPING. You can buy it at HSN's website HERE.

The Verdict?
The bottle is beautiful and sexy. The long-lasting, sweet pear/jasmine/amber fragrance can be worn during the day or night in my opinion. One or two sprays is enough. It's not intoxicating (in a bad way) or overwhelming like other perfumes. I really loved it and it's definitely a favorite!

1. How long have you been blogging?
I really haven't been blogging for that long, officially since February 2012.

And what got you started on blogging? I was bored.
Has your blog changed? Not really. I mean, I originally intended to blog about things I like, or personal experiences, and so far that's what I have been blogging about.
2. Did you go to college? Yes! If so where, and what did you study? I went to college in Las Cruces at New Mexico State University. I studied civil engineering.

3. Where have you traveled?

I was born in Monterrey, Mexico. And my family lived in a bunch of places when I was little: Torreon and Juarez, that's all I can remember. I've been to El Paso, all over New Mexico, Denver, and Colorado Springs. I went to Phoenix once for a robotics competition, and Austin and San Antonio, TX for a couple of vacations.
4. If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy? I don't know. Probably another college degree.

5. What are your 3 biggest pet peeves?

- I really don't like reality TV. I feel stupid watching people talk about nothing and do nothing.
- Intolerant people and religious freaks
- Rude people
6. What is your favorite movie?

I have a bunch but I really do love Apocalypto, Walle, and The Notebook.
7. What is your drink of choice; wine, beer, or liquor. Or Water, Soda, Tea?

Depends on what I am eating. If I'm eating Italian food I drink wine. If I am eating Mexican, I drink beer. Any other time I like tea or water.
8. What is something you enjoy to do when you have me time?

9. If you could have a $10,000 shopping spree to one store, which store would it be?

Express... Or the Apple Store. Man, that's a hard one.
10. Share with us an embarrassing moment of your past? Or present.

I have a bunch, but I pretty much embarrass myself every time I cook.
11. What day would you love to relive again?

I can think of a bunch. I have too many good memories.
12. If your life was turned into a movie... what actor would play you?

My life is pretty chill right now compared to how it used to be... but I am thinking someone like Ellen Page because she's little like me.
13. What are the jobs you had in high school/college/the early years?

I worked at a pizza place, which I hated, and a call center doing data entry, which I loved.
14. Show us a picture from high school or college.

I'm not the Asian one
15. If you could travel anywhere in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?

Anywhere in the world, huh... Probably Egypt to go see the Giza pyramids. Or have some crazy jungle adventure in the Amazon in South America. Yup, jungle adventure like the movie Anaconda.
16. Show us the most current picture of you or you, or your family, or anything of meaning to you.

30 lbs later... on my 24th birthday
17. Where do you see your life 5 years from now?

Happy, healthy, hopefully working on a different career. Something like social worker, or maybe a high school teacher... or professional food taster... One can only dream, right?

Birthday Recap

I am usually not a sentimental person, but lately I have been having sentimental moments. And that's okay, after all I am a girl. I'm supposed to have those every so often, right?
Growing up, I never really had any birthdays parties, but once I turned 18 and could do it on my own, I had huge birthdays parties every year around my birthday. Most of my friends would come and we would just hang out. Last year we even had a pinata! This year, since I moved, I was kind of nostalgic. It would have been the first birthday without my close friends and family. I didn't think it would be that great.
I haven't been in Santa Fe, NM for very long, I really don't know that many people here, but yet somehow this birthday managed to be the best birthday I have ever had.
Why was it the best? I didn't have a cake, or a party, or anything like that. But it was the best birthday because people that don't even know me that well, or that have recently met me, remembered my birthday and went out of their way to make it special and memorable.
For example, one of my friends, Matt, left me a present at my door. It was there when I woke up. It was full of things I specifically like.  Five bags of chips, Mexican Candy, the Aristocats (I mentioned I haven't seen it, how did he remember?), stuff for the hair, a Ross gift card and coffee. Every item (even the bags of chips) was carefully, and beautifully wrapped, and I could see he took the time putting together this wonderful present for me. That was a gesture that moved me to tears, and made me so happy. Not the fact that I got presents, but the fact that he took the time to put together something so thoughtful and specific. So I just cried. And someone pointed out that it was funny that a bag of chips could make me THAT happy.  I guess if you look at it that way, it is kind of funny.

Also other people also sent me stuff like candy, wine, flowers, chocolates, and a bag by Designer Simon Chang (he designs for Celine Dion and Shania Twain), and yes, more chips.

After all that excitement, it was time for dinner. I don't know if you know, but I love food. I also happen to be in one of the best places to eat in the US: Santa Fe, NM. Food here is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. From Mexican, to Italian, to African, you can find something for everyone, and everything is delicious. I opted for Italian.

I picked a restaurant that I had previously been to, and I thought it was great. The restaurant's name is Pranzo Italian Grill and everything is delicious. For appetizer we had the Antipasto Misto, which is imported Italian meats and cheeses with pesto, Sicilian olive medley, and pepperoncini. It was delicious. I had pinot noir wine to accompany it.

For my entree, I had something called Gnocchi Astice, which is lobster and gnocchi with bacon, chile flakes, garlic and peas, Saffron cream. One of the best things I have ever eaten in my life.

Wow the food there was so great. They also serve break with three different delicious oils, one of them is red chilli oil.

After dinner, I went home and watched the Aristocats, while sipping on a glass of wine.
Seriously, it was the best birthday ever, and I want to thank all of the people that made it so with phone calls, Facebook posts, text messages, etc.
I wasn't expecting so much kindness from people who have known me for so little time! I guess it really pays off to be nice! xoxoxox

Thrift Store Haul

I just came back from vacation in my hometown, Las Cruces, NM. It's funny how when you move away, visiting home counts as going on vacation. And to me it is, because the town that once was small, it's growing so fast it's crazy. Every time I go they get something new: a CVS, a huge market, a new restaurant, etc., so it is really like going on vacation and discovering different, new things.

Moving on, one of my favorite things to do (besides hanging out with friends and going out to eat) is going thrift shopping. Everything is so cheap and there are so many places to go. I did see Prada purse for $25 that I did not buy because I didn't like it. I'm guessing that's a great price for a huge Prada bag.

I am super picky with the clothes, it has to be something I like.
Here are some of the great items I found and how much they were!!!

American Eagle skirt, $0.99

Aeropostale skirt, $0.99

Aeropostale skirt, $0.99

Express Jeans, $3

The Limited pink top, $2

Express brown cami, $1

21 cardigan, $2

That's a bunch of super cute items for $12!
I needed skirts for the summer. Yay! Lucky me.

Epilator Review!

Before today, I've never tried an epilator. It just never caught my attention.
Until now.
I am going to review Braun Silk Epil 7 epilator.

It looks like this:

Braun Silk-Epil 7681 Wet & Dry Epilator

Pretty cool huh? Wait till you see what's inside:

  •  The actual epilator.
  • 5 different heads/caps for different areas of the body
  • A small cleaning brush
  • A charger
  • Instructions manual and warranty
  • A small bag for storage
  • Pre-epilation wipes by Olay
You can use it dry, or wet after it has been charged. In order for me to review this I let the hair on my legs grow enough to be plucked by this epilator. Don't laugh! haha

Ok, so what does this do? How does this work?

It's basically 40 "tweezers" in a rotating head that pluck the hairs as short as a grain of sand.

At first, it looked quite... scary. It sounds scary, and looks even scarier when turned on.

Here is a close-up picture of the epilator's head:

Since it can be used when the hair is dry or wet, I am going to try this on each leg, one dry and one wet.

 Okay, so what's the process?

First I used the pre-epilation wipes by Olay, to prepare my skin for gentle epilation. I used one on each leg and just rubbed each leg for 30 seconds.

To give you an idea of how long my hair was before the epilation, here is a close-up of a leg (like I said, don't laugh):

I started with dry first (left leg).
So I turned it on and I started the process, moving against the direction of the hair and being careful of not putting any pressure on the skin. Also stretching the skin while epilating.
Because hair grows in different directions, I guided the epilator in different directions. The Braun epilator has a very bright light that helps a lot with seeing the areas that need to be worked on!

Then, I tried the wet (right leg), just running some warm water over it, and repeated the process above.
To tell  you the truth, in my experience, I liked using it dry instead of wet. When the leg was wet, the hairs stuck to the skin and I actually spent more time epilating. And hairs were more elastic, and it hurt a little.

Does it hurt?

Yes and no. It hurts a little at the beginning, I mean, you are plucking hairs. It's going to hurt a little. But surprisingly, it hurts less than waxing. A lot less. And if you like using hot wax, then not only does it hurt less, it burns less. But after a few minutes, it stops hurting. I don't know if it's that your skin gets used to the plucking sensation, or the fact that I used the Olay wipes, or the fact that it has a high frequency massage system (which I totally felt), or a combination of the above. But it really doesn't hurt. It feels like a tickling sensation.

And the million dollar question:
Does it work?

Yes! It totally works, just as good as shaving and better than waxing. Since it's plucking hairs, I am going to assume it lasts just as long as waxing.
See? No hairs!!!!

The verdict??

I am in love with this product! Totally in love. I don't think I'll ever want to buy razors again.

Disclaimer: I won this Braun epilator from a fellow blogger, Gimmethatglow (go check her out, she's great!). I was not asked to write a review in order to receive the prize. This is my own honest opinion about the product.
